The upcoming American musical fantasy film, directed by Jon M. Chu and penned by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, is an adaptation of the legendary stage musical Wicked, itself inspired by Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Set in the Land of Oz, both before and after Dorothy Gale's arrival from Kansas, the movie explores the journey of Elphaba, a green-skinned witch, tracing her transformation into the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. Along the way, it explores her unexpected bond and eventual rivalry with Glinda Upland, later known as Glinda the Good.
Wicked is set to premiere on November 27, 2024, followed by a sequel titled Wicked: Part Two slated for release in 2025.
The Wicked film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, with Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, and Keala Settle in supporting roles.
