New show!
Both the first production of the 2015/16 season and the first under Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley's new name, Silicon Valley Ballet, this staging of the romantic classic Giselle has one more very special first to celebrate. As part of a new initiative celebrating new connections between the USA and Cuba, SVB hold the distinction of being the first American company to perform Cuban choreographic legend Alicia Alonso's poetic new staging.
Tragic Beauty: The story of Giselle
In two acts, the life of a shy and lovely peasant girl Giselle unravels irrevocably in justly poetic fashion. Her heart is lost to the handsome Albrecht, who, as is the nature of these tales, a nobleman in disguise. Whilst enjoying his last days of freedom before his impending nuptials, Albrecht is swept away by the beautiful but weak Giselle. When his deception is learned, Giselle dies, heartbroken and mad with grief.
But all is not lost, at least for the Wilis, a brace of supernatural spirits who mercilessly dance men to their deaths, driving them mad with desire. When they summon the newly deceased Giselle from her woodland grave, they hope she will help them get revenge on Albrecht. But will her previous weakness continue in death, or will her heart find rest in forgiveness?
