EXCELLENT EVENING

Opera San Jose has done it again -- given a brilliant production of a loved opera. The singing was magnificent. I thought that the first three voices we heard were superb, and they were (Mason Gates, Gustav Andreasson, and Noel Bouley). Then soprano Kerriann Otano took the stage and blew me away. Come see her before she becomes famous! if you haven't been inside the California Theatre, this is a great opportunity. It's a beautiful gem, with excellent acoustics and sightlines, that makes for a very special evening. I mean it. Only 2 more performances left!

AMAZING PERFORMANCE

This is The Flying Dutchman as it really ought to be. Beautifully staged, fine orchestra, and extraordinary singing. Kerriann Otano blew me away -- she is a Senta for the ages, and will no doubt move from triumph to triumph. Bouley was a wonderful Dutchman; the rest of the cast was also excellent. I cannot recommend this performance highly enough.

PUZZLING PRODUCTION OF A PUZZLING OPERA

I found the performance I saw on Sunday, Feb 18 a valiant attempt using current IT to project images of ships to show the arrival of the ship of the cursed Dutchman and the subsequent moving of the smaller craft beside it. The actor singers used the projections expertly all things considered. But the redemption of the Dutchman by Senta with both rising into heaven never really happened for me visually. Maybe I just missed it. A strange opera and a challenge to produce. No wonder it is seldom done.
